10:00am - ?
Skill level: Novice/ beginner / intermediate
Cost: $650 per person
Instructors: Morgan Crook, David Wilson & Miles Henry
Come explore the fourth state of matter in this three day intensive and hands on plasma sculpture class. We will be combining high vacuum, high voltage, rare noble gasses and sculptural glassblowing techniques to create beautiful interactive works of glowing art.
We will be vacuum filing both electrode and wireless pieces and have lots of technical class discussion, as well as hands on glass work.
Please note: This is a beginner class as far as the plasma aspect goes, it is strongly recommended you have previous glass working experience. We will cover glass blowing techniques relevant to making plasma sculpture and make some funky glass, but it is not a glass blowing class.
What else?
All classes include a mixture of live demonstrations, personal instruction and individual work time.
We will also cover heat and stress, kiln annealing, some science behind it and why all these factors matter. Many other useful skills will be covered as well as what you need to know about safely setting up a flameworking studio, what equipment you need, and how to use it.
All classes come with lifetime help and tech support. If you ever have any glassblowing questions feel free to give me a holler.
What to know
FAQ
Wildfire Studios is a fully functional professional glass teaching studio. All necessary glass, tools, equipment, and safety gear are provided unless otherwise stated in the class discription.
Glassblowing is an inherently dangerous activity that requires the utmost respect for, and attention to, the heat, fire and other hazards around you. You will be required to sign a form stating you understand this and are willing to assume the responsibility of working in the studio
Feel free to bring your own equipment, let me know if you want to bring a torch so I can make sure I have the fittings to connect it.
Do bring lunch, snacks, and a drink/ water bottle. A small fridge is available.
Clothing during class: Natural fibers only, no synthetic or blended clothing. Why? Plastic can melt when exposed to heat and stick to you, there is a lower chance of injury with cotton clothing because the fabric will just singe.
No open-toe shoes.
Long pants are recommend.
Tie up long hair.
No loose jewelry.
You will need to wear special safety glasses, there are fit over frames available if you already wear prescription glasses.
Dress for the weather. Due to hot kilns, burning torches and the need for good ventilation, climate control in a glass studio is difficult. When it is hot outside it is hot in the studio, and when it's cold it's cold.
Kids: Children 12 years and older are welcome to work on the torch only with close adult supervision unless otherwise noted.
Pets: Sorry but pets are not allowed.
Amenities: Free camping with facilities on site. Come pitch your tent and be lulled to sleep by the babbling of Brown's Creek after lounging around by the campfire. Firewood and chairs are provided.
24/7 access to private, heated bathroom facilitates in the studio. Sorry, but the shower is currently under construction.
There is a small fridge in the studio you are welcome to keep drinks and lunch in.
